The Varchanis Research Group focuses on predicting and controlling systems in which fluid flow, microstructural deformation and reorganization, and interfacial dynamics are strongly coupled. Examples of such systems include polymeric fluids, suspensions, emulsions, foams, and biological fluids. We study these interactions across scales to uncover the physical mechanisms that connect microscopic dynamics to macroscopic transport properties and translate this understanding into quantitative models and design principles. This perspective unifies our work on complex fluids, soft matter, and living systems. We apply these insights to address challenges and accelerate innovation in industrial processing, materials engineering, and biomechanics.
